Oregon Covered Bridges - Gallon House (Abiqua Creek) Bridge, Marion County
<< Marion County Bridges All Covered Bridges >>

Situated a mile north of Silverton, the Gallon House bridge is the last of Marion County's original covered bridges.
The name Gallon House refers to the bridge's use as a 'pigeon drop' for liquor.
Operators at a liquor dispensary nearby sold whiskey by the gallon to Silverton residents.

During the Christmas flood of 1964, the bridge suffered extensive damage.
It was decided that the bridge should be repaired as an historical landmark, being at that time the only covered bridge in the county.

In 1985, the bridge was closed to traffic when a damaged chord rendered it useless.
The bridge was repaired to accept traffic up to a 10-ton limit by reinforcing a lower chord.
Also changed or repaired at this time was the size and shape of the portals, the beams and flooring.
The new portals were hinged to allow for tall loads to cross the bridge.

In 1990, the bridge was restored to mint condition and the hinged portals were removed.
